Traveling with pets in India is becoming easier, thanks to the facilities provided by Indian Railways. Pet parents can now travel with their dogs and other pets legally through trains by following a simple process.

If you're planning to travel with your pet and searching for how to travel with pets in India, pet transport by train, or the Indian Railways pet policy, this guide covers everything - from booking to boarding.

Why Choose Train Travel for Pets in India?

One can travel via multiple ways, i.e., car, flight and train, but trains turn out to be the most balanced option out of all three, as they offer a balanced combination of affordability, comfort, and accessibility.

  • Train vs Air Travel (Pets)
  • Cheaper than flights - Ideal for budget-friendly pet travel
  • Fewer restrictions - Airlines often have breed and weight limitations
  • No cargo stress - Avoids anxiety caused by air pressure and isolation
  • Train vs Car Travel (Pets)
  • Better for long - distance pet travel
  • Less tiring for owners
  • More space for pets to relax

Ways to Travel with Pets on Indian Railways

There are two main options for dog travel in Indian railways -

  • Dog Box (Brake Van Transport) - On selected trains, Indian Railways provides a dedicated space for pet transport known as the “dog box.” This facility is located inside the luggage or brake van, commonly referred to as the SLR (Seating-cum-Luggage Rake). In this arrangement, your pet travels separately in the designated compartment, while you travel in your booked seat in another coach. The dog box is designed with ventilation windows and enough space to accommodate your pet’s crate or carrier safely. It also includes a secure locking mechanism to ensure safety during transit. However, since your pet is not with you throughout the journey, it becomes your responsibility to check on them during station halts and ensure they are comfortable, hydrated, and safe.
  • First Class AC Cabin / Coupe - The most recommended and comfortable option for pet travel in Indian trains is booking a First Class AC (1AC) cabin or coupe, where your pet can stay with you throughout the journey. This option allows you to travel together in a private enclosed space, ensuring your pet feels secure and less anxious. Traveling in a cabin also gives you the flexibility to carry all essential pet travel accessories, such as bedding, food, water bowls, treats, and cleaning supplies. If your pet is crate-trained, you can set up a comfortable carrier with a mat or blanket, allowing them to rest peacefully during the journey. Foldable food and water bowls are especially useful, as they are easy to carry and convenient to use during travel. You can choose between:
  • 2-berth coupe (more private)
  • 4-berth cabin

Note - Not all trains in Indian Railways have dog box facilities or First Class AC compartments, so pets can only travel on trains where these options are available. While booking tickets on IRCTC, you can check for First AC (1AC) availability to confirm whether a train supports pet travel in cabins.

How to Book Pet Travel via IRCTC (Step-by-Step)

For many pet parents, booking train travel for their dog can feel a bit overwhelming—especially if it’s your first time navigating the process. The system isn’t entirely straightforward, and while Indian Railways has introduced improvements over time, it still requires planning, patience, and early preparation.

The booking process through IRCTC can take time, so it’s best to start when you’re not in a rush. Also, always plan your journey well in advance, as First Class AC cabins (required for traveling with pets) are limited and get booked quickly. It’s important to note that pets are only allowed if your ticket is confirmed - waitlisted tickets are not valid for pet travel.

  • Book Your Own Train Ticket First - The first step is to book your own ticket in First Class AC (1AC), preferably a coupe (2-berth) or cabin (4-berth). Since your pet is linked to your journey, their travel is attached to your PNR number. Typically, one pet is allowed per PNR, so if you’re traveling with multiple pets, you’ll need to book separate tickets accordingly.Choosing a full cabin increases your chances of being allowed to travel comfortably with your pet.
  • Book Your Pet’s Ticket (Online or Offline) - Once your ticket is confirmed, you can proceed to book your pet’s travel. Indian Railways introduced an online pet booking feature in 2023, where you can:
  • Log in to IRCTC
  • Navigate to the “Dogs/Cats Booking” section under “Trains”
  • Enter your PNR number
  • Verify using OTP and ID details
  • Complete the booking process
  • Visit the Parcel Office (Essential Step) - Since the feature is still relatively new, many travelers continue to rely on the traditional offline method via the Parcel Office, which remains the most widely accepted approach. Even if you initiate the process online, you will still need to visit the railway parcel office before your journey. Here, you’ll have to:
  • Submit your documents
  • Register your pet for travel
  • Pay the applicable charges
  • Apply for Permission to Travel with Your Pet - If you plan to travel with your pet inside a cabin, you’ll need to submit a request along with supporting documents, including:
  • Fit-to-travel certificate from a veterinarian
  • Updated vaccination records
  • Your ID proof
  • A written request to the railway authorities (Chief Reservation Officer / Controller)

Your pet’s ticket is usually calculated as equivalent to 60 kg of luggage, regardless of their actual weight. After payment, you’ll receive a receipt, which serves as your pet’s travel ticket - so keep it safe.

On the Day of Travel

On the day of your journey, please make sure to arrive at the station at least 2–3 hours early.

You’ll need to:

  • Complete final verification at the parcel office
  • Show your documents and receipt
  • Coordinate with railway staff for boarding
