About

The Turkish Van is a natural cat breed originating from the Lake Van region of eastern Turkey. Famous for its striking appearance and unique fascination with water, the Turkish Van is considered one of the oldest and rarest cat breeds in the world. Its distinctive "Van pattern" features a predominantly white body with color markings on the head and tail.

Turkish Vans are medium-to-large cats with a strong, muscular build, broad chest, and semi-long silky coat that lacks a dense undercoat. This gives their fur a soft, cashmere-like texture that is surprisingly easy to maintain. Common color patterns include red-and-white, cream-and-white, black-and-white, blue-and-white, and tortoiseshell-and-white.

Known for their intelligence and athleticism, Turkish Vans are highly active cats that enjoy climbing, jumping, and interactive play. They are affectionate with their families but tend to maintain an independent streak. Unlike many cat breeds, Turkish Vans are often fascinated by water and may enjoy splashing in sinks, bathtubs, or even swimming.

This breed thrives in homes where it receives mental stimulation, playtime, and opportunities to explore. Turkish Vans generally get along well with children and other pets when properly socialized. Their playful nature often continues well into adulthood.

The Turkish Van cat price in India typically ranges between ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 depending on breeder quality, lineage, and location. Monthly maintenance costs range from ₹3,000 to ₹7,000 including food and healthcare.

Fun Facts

  • According to Turkish legend, the colored marking often seen between a Turkish Van’s shoulders is known as the “Thumbprint of Allah.” It is said to be a divine blessing, left when Allah gently touched the cat as a reward for its courage and loyalty.
  • Turkish Vans have a charming built-in “mood indicator” — their pink nose often becomes a deeper rosy red when they’re excited, annoyed, or emotionally worked up, making it surprisingly easy to read their feelings.
