About

The Tonkinese is a charming and highly social cat breed created by crossing the Siamese and Burmese breeds. Combining the best qualities of both parent breeds, the Tonkinese is known for its affectionate personality, intelligence, and beautiful appearance. These cats are often described as outgoing, people-oriented companions that love being involved in family activities.

Tonkinese cats have a medium-sized, muscular body with a sleek coat, expressive eyes, and a graceful appearance. Their short, silky coat comes in several colors, including natural, champagne, blue, and platinum, often displayed in solid, mink, or pointed patterns. One of the breed’s most distinctive features is its striking aqua-colored eyes, especially in mink-patterned cats.

This breed is highly intelligent, curious, and playful. Tonkinese cats enjoy interactive toys, puzzle games, climbing structures, and spending time with their owners. They are known for following people around the house and often seek attention, affection, and conversation. Their social nature makes them excellent companions for families, children, and other pets.

Tonkinese cats are active but adaptable, enjoying both playtime and relaxing with their families. They generally do not like being left alone for long periods and thrive in homes where they receive plenty of interaction and mental stimulation.

The Tonkinese cat price in India typically ranges between ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 depending on breeder quality, lineage, and location. Monthly maintenance costs range from ₹3,500 to ₹8,000 including food and healthcare.

Fun Facts

  • A Tonkinese cat named Tarawood Antigone from Oxfordshire, England, holds the record for one of the largest domestic cat litters ever recorded. In 1970, she gave birth to an incredible 19 kittens in a single litter, with 15 surviving, an achievement that remains remarkable in feline history.
  • The Tonkinese may sound like it comes from the Tonkin region of Vietnam, but the breed actually has no historical connection to the area. Interestingly, when the breed was first developed, it was originally called “Tonkanese,” inspired by the fictional island of Bali Ha’i in the musical South Pacific—a place where people of mixed heritage were accepted and celebrated. The name reflected the Tonkinese's own mixed ancestry, combining the Siamese and Burmese breeds.
